Dr. Chris Patti, an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and an Affiliate Faculty for the Center for Judaic, Holocaust, & Peace Studies, recently attended an event at the North Carolina Governor's Mansion. During the event, he led a discussion with Bob Horowitz, the son of Mrs. Karoline Horowitz, who shared stories of his family's incredible journey. Mrs. Horowitz, along with her husband and children, fled from Europe and the Nazis in the 1940s and settled in Western North Carolina. She donated an impressive crystal chandelier to the NC Executive Mansion 50 years ago. This chandelier was one of the few family heirlooms left behind by her parents, Gustav and Selma Strauss, who died in the Holocaust. The chandelier still hangs in the state dining room of the Mansion and is used to share their story with visitors and school groups who tour it daily.
