Keynote Speakers of the 2021 SEGSW

The online keynote lecture of the 2021 Southeast German Studies Workshop (SEGSW) will be delivered on Thursday, March 18, from 11:15 am until 1:00 pm EST (17:15-19:00 Uhr MEZ) by Prof. Stefanie Schüler-Springorum (Berlin). In her lecture, Prof. Schüler-Springorum will discuss the topic of "Gender, Sex and Violence: Race Defilement in Nazi Germany." The lecture is open to the public. To attend, simply register here.

A native of Hamburg, Germany, Schüler-Springorum holds a Ph.D. from the University of Bochum. She completed her award-winning dissertation under the direction of Helga Grebing und Hans Mommsen. During the second half of the 1990s, Schüler-Springorum served as a research associate at the Foundation Topography of Terror in Berlin (under Prof. Reinhard Rürup) and taught at the TU Berlin's Center for Interdisciplinary Women's and Gender Studies. From 2001-2011, she served as the Director of the renowned Institute for the History of German Jews in Hamburg. In 2007, Schüler-Springorum also became a professor at the University of Hamburg. Since 2011, she has been the Director of the Center for Research on Antisemitism (ZfA) at the Technical University Berlin. The 1982-founded ZfA is the only center of its kind in the Federal Republic.  

Since 1996, Schüler-Springorum has been a member of the Scientific Working Group of the Leo Baeck Institute, serving as its chair since 2009. Beginning in 2012, she also represents the TU on the Executive Board of the Center of Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg. Schüler-Springorum is also a member of the advisory boards for the European Holocaust Research Infrastructure, Brussels (chair, 2010–2019); German Historical Institute, Washington (deputy chair, since 2016); Leo Baeck Institute, London;  Leo Baeck Fellowship der Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes; Hochschule für Jüdische Studien, Heidelberg; Gedenk- und Bildungsstätte Haus der Wannsee-Konferenz, Berlin (deputy chair since 2013); Heidelberg; Zentrum Zeithistorische Forschung, Potsdam; Topography of Terror Foundation; Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Studienwerk e. V. (Vertrauensdozentin); Brandenburg Memorial Foundation; Memorial and Educational Site House of the Wannsee Conference; Körber Stiftung; Herbert und Elsbeth Weichmann Stiftung; Alfred Landecker Foundation; Jewish Museum Berlin; and the Moses Mendelssohn Foundation, Berlin.

Prof. Schüler-Springorum is the author of Die jüdische Minderheit in Königsberg/Pr. 1871-1945 (1996); Krieg und Fliegen. Die Legion Condor im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg (2010); Geschlecht und Differenz (2014), and Braun Lectures in the History of the Jews in Germany (2018). Her co-edited volumes include (with K. Heinsohn) Deutsch-jüdische Geschichte als Geschlechtergeschichte. Studien zum 19. und 20. Jahrhundert (2005); Gedächtnis und Gewalt - Nationale und transnationale Erinnerungsräume im östlichen Europa (2016); and (mit Achim Rohde und Christina von Braun) National Politics and Sexuality in Transregional Perspective (2018). In addition, she is the co-editor of the Jahrbuch für Antisemitismusforschung (since 2012).
