2017-18 Film Series
 On Wednesday, April 4, the Center will screen the critically-acclaimed early German postwar film The Murderers Are Among Us (Die Moerder sind unter uns, DEFA 1946). Center director Dr. T. Pegelow Kaplan will introduce the film and evaluate its role in addressing and failing to address the country's recent mass crimes. The screening will take place in 201B Table Rock (part of Blue Ridge Ballroom) on the second floor of Plemmons Student Union (PSU). The program will start at 7:30 pm and is free of charge. |

The film is based on a book by the poet Diane Ackerman, who based her work on the unpublished memoirs of Antonina Zabinski. Along with her husband Jan, who worked at the Polish capital’s zoo, Antonina Zabinski hid and saved several hundred Warsaw Jews after the German 1939 invasion. The film was shot by New Zealand filmmaker Niki Caro, known for Whale Rider (2002), in Prague, Czech Republic. The screenings are open to the general public. The Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies is co-sponsoring the screening of Sarajevo Roses by award-winning director and producer Roger M. Richards. The screening will take place in Greenbriar Theater on the second floor of Plemmons Student Union (PSU) on Monday, November 6. The program will start at 7:00 pm and is free of charge. A discussion with director and producer Roger M. Richards, who was in Sarajevo at the height of the conflict, will follow the screening. The film is a cinematic essay on the siege of the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo during the Yugoslav Wars of Secession of the early 1990s. In the course of the conflict, Bosnian Serb forces fired hundreds of thousands of artillery and mortar shells into the city, leaving craters in the concrete that resembled flowers. On Monday, October 2, the Center will screen the recently-released film Germans & Jews: History of the Memory of a People. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with Professor Rosemary Horowitz (English/JHP) and Center director Prof. Thomas Pegelow Kaplan (JHP/History). The events will take place in Greenbriar Theater on the second floor of Plemmons Student Union (PSU). The program will start at 7:00 pm and is free of charge.
The Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies is proudly co-sponsoring the Appalachian Popular Programming Society’s screening of the 2017 feature film The Zoo Keeper’s Wife on the ASU campus. The screenings will take place at 7:00 and 9:30 pm on September 7, 8, and 9 in I.G. Greer Auditorium located at 401 Academy Street.
