"Our Past 400 Years: North Carolina's Jewish History" with Dr. Leonard Rogoff
Date & Time: Thursday, September 28, 2023, from 7-9 p.m.
In this lecture, Rogoff, a world-renowned research historian and expert on the history of Judaism in North Carolina, discusses the 400 years of Jewish history in the state. Little understood, Rogoff sheds light on how Jews contributed to the industrial growth of the 18th and 19th centuries and to the rise of the Progressive Era in North Carolina. This little-understood part of North Carolina history informs us of the many contributions made by Jewish communities that dotted the state, highlighting the important impact of Jewish history here. Rogoff and the Jewish Heritage North Carolina provide a documentary with an accompanying book by Rogoff called "Down Home: Jewish Life in North Carolina." His fascinating lecture will highlight portions of these works.
Organized by the Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies, the program was co-sponsored by Appalachian State's College of Arts and Sciences, Department of History, Department of Interdisciplinary Studes and Department of Philosophy and Religion.
