About the Lecture

Compassionate Communication with Dr. Chris Patti
Thursday, February 20, 2025, from 7-9 p.m.

Dr. Chris Patti, an associate professor in App State's Department of Communication and an affiliate faculty member for the Center for Judaic, Holocaust and Peace Studies (CJHPS), introduces a process called compassionate communication as a tool for working with survivors of genocide and trauma. He discusses the challenges of interviewing well and without creating harm. Dr. Patti shares how “doing the humanely obvious” when communicating is still cutting edge in society—particularly in the fields of medicine, academia, education, politics, law and even everyday life. He shares key moments and insights from his work with Holocaust survivors as a way to focus and explore these broader issues and conversations. Join us for a productive, proactive and collaborative conversation about the best ways for us to live our ideals—such as compassionate communication—in the real world and our everyday lives, as they exist now!
