Holocaust Survivor Prof. Emeritus Shimon Redlich (Ben-Gurion University) Interviewed By Prof. Gabriel Finder(University of Virginia)
The 2019 Future of Holocaust Testimonies conference in Akko, Israel, also encompassed multiple accounts by survivor-witnesses. In one of the most memorable panels, Prof. Gaby Finder, the Ida and Nathan Kolodiz Director of Jewish Studies at UVA, interviewed Prof. Emeritus Shimon Redlich of Ben-Gurion University. Redlich was born in in Lwow, Poland, in 1935. He survived the German occupation and the Shoah first in the Brzezany Ghetto and, with the help of a Polish and a Ukrainian family, in the nearby village of Raj. Along with surviving members of his family, he emigrated to Israel in 1950. As Gaby Finder said in summation, the interview highlighted "one survivor's testimonial journey through time." It also directly illuminates the process of remembering and engaging in oral histories. The panel demonstrated one survivor's willingness to increasingly share particularly painful memories as well as break with taboos and conventions in the course of a long professional and personal friendship with the interviewer.
